The department of Biomedical engineering at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) started its journey in 2016 with 30 undergraduate students. The aim of this department is to train students who will develop and advance engineering technology to improve human health. The department of BME emphasizes on education and research through an effective collaboration among the disciplines of engineering, biology, and medicine. Currently, the department of BME is under the faculty of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE), located in the ECE building at West Palashi.
A MESSAGE FROM THE DEPARTMENT HEAD
Our vision is to develop a world-class undergraduate program and also a cutting-edge research facility for postgraduate studies in the biomedical engineering department of BUET. For undergraduate studies, we emphasized on closely following the curriculum of top universities in the world. Our faculty members visited biomedical engineering laboratories worldwide, including some top-ranked universities, to gain in-depth knowledge about their BME programs. Thus, we are committed to building our undergraduate labs with facilities that are comparable to the programs in the developed countries.
We aspire to build this department with a focus on design, development and research, aiming at solving longstanding health-related problems in our country, as well as train students to become renowned scholars in this new and fascinating field of study.
We also aspire to build this department with a focus on design, development and research, aiming at solving longstanding health-related problems in our country, as well as train students to become renowned scholars in this new and fascinating field of study. Our hope is to foster the research mindset within the undergraduate and post-graduate curriculum so that the students can get involved in state-of-the-art technologies. Our long-term goal includes building a separate building for BME, with modern teaching and research lab facilities, along with a Pre-Clinical/Clinical Research Unit (CRU), where we will perform cutting-edge research on cancer diagnosis, targetted drug delivery, clinical informatics, gait and clinical movement, mHealth and telemedicine.
In addition to high-end research, we would also serve the local needs in Bangladesh. We hope to inspire our students to be innovative and become biomedical engineering entrepreneurs after graduation. These enthusiastic students will build their own companies that will aim to solve health problems in Bangladesh at low-cost using the limited resources available. Finally, the department of BME will provide various expertise services in the health-care sector of Bangladesh.
