WHAT IS BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING?

Biomedical engineering is a multidisciplinary field of study that applies engineering principles to analyze, examine, change or control biological systems, develop devices that can monitor living organisms, and serve in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. BME is a highly interdisciplinary area of study that ranges from theory to applications, encompassing research, development, implementation, and operation. It is currently one of the fastest-growing engineering disciplines in the world.

WHY STUDY BME?

BME offers a unique opportunity compared to other engineering disciplines. It is a field of study dedicated to improving human lives through advancing engineering applications in the health sector. For prospective students motivated to serve humanity and make an impact in society, BME is an ideal choice – offering a unique balance between medicine, healthcare, and engineering. Likewise, the BME career is highly satisfying and, in some cases, at a similar level as with medical doctors. The BME department at BUET envisions encouraging research and innovation-focused academic culture. We expect our graduates to be highly motivated, competent, and creative in their careers.

PROSPECTS OF BME

Biomedical engineering is currently the fastest-growing engineering field. In academia, research activities encompass topics such as designing artificial organs, creating nano-robots for surgery, and developing advanced imaging and signal processing techniques for diagnosing cancer and other life-threatening diseases. Many research areas can have a direct real-world impact; for example, in the field of medical imaging-based diagnostics, e.g., MRI, CT scan, ultrasound, BME graduates with expert knowledge of optics and engineering of the devices will possess the expertise to work with medical practitioners on interpreting clinical data.

BME is an emerging and open field in Bangladesh. As a developing country with a large population, there are many problems to be solved in the healthcare sector using technology. For example, BME graduates can conduct extensive research activities to design and develop biomedical equipment and devices, imaging modalities, artificial tissue/organ, implants and prosthetics, and healthcare-related software at low cost in Bangladesh. They can innovate and start their own technology companies to design and develop new biomedical devices to improve healthcare services. A prime example is the low-cost OxyJet CPAP device developed by our department during the COVID-19 crisis, which was approved by the Directorate General of Drug Administration (DGDA).

Mobile health technologies and telemedicine are among other impactful areas where graduates can work to bring high-quality healthcare benefits to the doorstep of rural people. In addition, BME graduates can be involved in health policy making, join government research labs, build artificial organs and prosthetics for disabled people, and work with pharmaceuticals on advanced personalized medicine. As the top engineering university graduates in the country, we expect BME graduates of BUET to become leaders in their chosen areas.
