It is with great pleasure to announce that two undergraduate students from BUET, Atkia Atia and Md. Iftekharul Haque Fahim, from the Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME), have achieved the remarkable feat of securing the second place at the prestigious Johns Hopkins Healthcare Design Competition 2023. Their work, titled “Smile-geist: A design approach for dental implant surgical guide,” was highly regarded by the judges and is a testament to their hard work and dedication. They introduced surgical guide-assisted dental implant surgery for the very first time in Bangladesh. They designed the surgical guide from the CBCT data only and used the laboratory’s 3D printing facility.
This achievement will open a new chapter in the dental implant surgery in Bangladesh, where an intra-oral scanner is still unavailable. Md. Kawsar Ahmed, from the Department of BME, served as Supervisor, and Doctor Al-Amin Sarkar served as a clinical collaborator. It is hopeful that such innovative efforts will continue to shape the future of digital healthcare.
