We are thrilled to announce that Team OsteoAssist has won 1st prize in the highly competitive and prestigious 2024 Medtronic/BMES Student Design Competition in the special category “AI/ML for Sport Injuries and Orthopedic Conditions.” Competing against teams led by PhD and MD students, our undergraduate team from BUET was the only finalist from Asia across all four tracks and the only non-U.S. finalist in this category! The team, comprising Farihin Rahman and Sayeed Sajjad Razin, traveled to Baltimore, Maryland, to attend the 4-day 2024 BMES Annual Meeting and present their project on a global stage. OsteoAssist is an opportunistic, X-ray-based screening tool for detecting low bone mass and osteoporosis, designed to assist doctors in decision-making within existing infrastructure. Developed under the supervision of Dr. Taufiq Hasan, this tool integrates seamlessly into current teleradiology and clinical workflows, advancing equity in medical care. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Taufiq Hasan for his invaluable guidance and mentorship throughout the project’s development. Many thanks to our collaborators, Dr. ASM Shahidul Hossain and Dr. Mahbuba Shirin. Special thanks to Awsaf Rahman and Syed Sadman Sabbir for their technical support in integrating the AI model into our RadAssist tele-radiology platform. We are thankful to Md. Kawsar Ahmed, Khadijatul Kobra and Shawkat Osman Shishir for helping the team prepare for the final presentation. Finally, we are tremendously grateful to BUET VC Sir and DSW Sir for providing financial support for international travel expenses, and to RISE for supporting this impactful undergraduate thesis work.
